Historic Welcome Center Opens on Broad Street
Society Offices Move to New Village Facility
In recent weeks, Greendale Historical Society volunteers have been packing, moving, unpacking and reorganizing its archives and memorabilia including photographs, documents, and other artifacts pertaining to Greendale’s history as it moved to its new home in the soon to be open Historic Greendale Welcome Center on Broad Street.
It is a big change. For over 25 years, the Greendale Historical Society has worked from a basement office in the Greendale Public Library (now Community Learning Center).
The Society is moving because the Village of Greendale invited the Society to share it’s newly leased Welcome Center storefront, located in the heart of Greendale’s historic business district at 5680 Broad Street. Indeed, the Society is playing an important role in the Village’s new Welcome Center. While the Village has contributed office space, the Historical Society in turn consulted on the design of the facility and is funding production of the exhibits.
““The idea behind the Historic Greendale Welcome Center, is that it will serve as a destination for people to learn more about the history of Greendale and everything else that the Village has to offer, said Village Manager Todd Michaels. “It will serve as a gateway for people when they’re visiting our community.”
The Village has hired a Tourism Coordinator to help promote the Welcome Center and the Village. Caitlyn White will have her office in the main portion of the Welcome Center. Volunteers will help staff the center and will be provided by the Greendale Historical Society, community members and other groups.
The storefront location is designed to welcome visitors to Greendale and share with them our community’s story and what the Village and nearby area have to offer. Featured inside will be a series of exhibits detailing the story of Greendale, our National Landmark designation, information about current businesses, community activities, and much more.
“Special thanks to Roy Reiman for the many years he offered all visitors and Greendale residents a great Welcome Center. With the closing of that center, the Village of Greendale will open its own Historic Greendale Welcome Center to promote the Village. We are honored to have the Greendale Historical Society join us in this venture. Now we have a place all can go to and not only get information on the great things and places Greendale has to offer, but to see and learn about the history of our great community from its beginning to the present day.”
“Village officials and the Greendale Historical Society have been working together to safeguard the Village’s historic and cultural heritage, as embodied and reflected its historic structures, sites and district,” says Society President Ted Mainella. “This is an exciting, new chapter in our special relationship with the community.”
